’Malta 2014’ was a 10 day workshop (7th to 16th of September 2014) organized by the French National Center for Scientific Research CNRS in the framework of its BIODIVMEX programme, the Israeli non-profit organization ECOOCEAN, and the University of Malta.
The workshop provided 15 young researchers in marine science with lectures, demonstrations and field work pertaining to Mediterranean marine ecosystems (see day to day summery).

Marie Grenier is a MSc student in Oceanography, marine environment, marine biology and ecology in Marseille, France. She is specially interested in natural and anthropogenic impacts on marine ecosystems and biodiversity as well as functionning and interactions of environmental parameters in pelagic ecosystems.

Rachel Kelly is an irish student currently in EMBC+ masters programme. She studied at UAlg Portugal last year and will be at UMPC, France until Christmas. Her main interests in marine biodiversity are to understand biodiversity dynamics and to develop conservation objectives based on this. In the new year she will begin an internship with NOAA’s MPA Centre in Monterey California ! |

Guillaume Marchessaux is an MSc student in Marine Biology and Ecology in Marseille, France. He studies ecosystems’ structure and anthropogenic pressures. He studies zooplankton of Indian Ocean with his supervisor Marc Pagano. They describe the trophic structure of planktonic communities and, would like to work on the impacts of different toxic substances on zooplankton communities. |

Alberto Martinez has finished his studies as a Forestry Engineer, Marine Sciences Graduate and MSc. in Oceanography. Currently, he works as Research Assisstant in the “Instituto de Investigación en Medio Ambiente y Ciencia Marina” (Institute of Environment and Marine Science Research) (IMEDMAR) of the “Universidad Católica de Valencia SVM” (Calpe, Alicante, Spain) on the bivalve Pinna nobilis. He is particularly interested in cave ecology and in the near future, would like to start a PhD on the subject.

Laura Palomba is an MSc student in the Professional Master of Oceanography and marine environment in Marseille, France. Her interests concern human impacts on marine biology, human development / protection of marine environment, managing of coastal environment.

César Ruiz is from Colombia, were he started his scientific training, being passionate about sponge biology and history, he had the luck to meet a great teacher in Colombia that gave him the opportunity to work with the Poriferans. Having finished his University, he was once again lucky to be accepted in a french university, and continu his formation in marine biology at the Aix-Marseille University. Based in Marseille, he met some great sponge researchers that once again gave him the opportunity to work among them. Currently, he is doing his first year of PhD programme, always with sponges ! |

Erica Scerri has completed her BSc Conservation Biology and Ecology at the University of Exeter, UK and has now returned to Malta with the intension of furthering her studies in an environmental area of importance to Malta, the Mediterranean Sea. She actually studies fish fauna associated with marine habitats subject to different anthropogenic modifications. |

Alexiane Viret has a MSc in marine biology and ecology from the university of Aix-Marseille (OSU Pytheas). She is interested in different fields such as genetics, microbiology or physiology. At the Institut of evolutionary science in Montpellier, she worked on the genetic structure of Dentex dentex using microsatellite markers. |

Siel Wellens obtained her MSc in Marine Biodiversity and Conservation in 2014 at Ghent University in Belgium in cooperation with University of the Algarve in Portugal, Klaipeda University in Lithuania and Federal University of Paraná in Brazil. Her master dissertation was on Mangrove Ecology and (Tropical) Biodiversity Research is her passion and hopefully future. |
